Convenient, comfortable, and cost-effective dental sealants for a cavity-free mouth
Sealants represent one of the simplest, most convenient, and cost-effective methods that our office, Arnold Rifman, DDS, in Hollywood, California, uses to help minimize the risk of cavities. Dental sealant can be applied to decay-prone tooth surfaces. In doing so, Dr. Rifman effectively “seals out” all the factors that contribute to the development of tooth decay and dental disease – such as food particles that become trapped in teeth, bacteria, and plaque.

Can sealants be applied to all teeth?
No. Sealants are applied to the backmost “chewing” teeth. This preventive product is brushed on as a liquid to the grooves, pits, and fissures on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Once it is hardened, the sealant protects the tooth from the cavity-causing substances mentioned above. Keeping harmful substances away helps ensure that your teeth, as well as your child’s teeth, stay healthy.
How effective are sealants?
The CDC reports that nine out of every 10 cavities develop in the back teeth. They also report that, when applied as soon as the first and second molars come in, they prevent 80% of cavities for the first two years after placement. And they continue to protect against 50% of cavities after four years.
When should sealants be placed?
The first molars typically erupt or break through the gums at around the age of six. The second molars usually erupt between the ages of 12 and 13. It is generally recommended that sealants be placed as soon as these back teeth are visible. With this approach, we prevent the molars from decaying. Pieces of food cannot become trapped in the uneven surfaces of these vulnerable teeth. Bacteria feed off of these food particles, which promotes the development of destructive plaque and tartar. We significantly reduce this risk factor for plaque and cavities by shielding those surfaces that would otherwise trap food.
Are sealants just for young kids?
No. Sealants are suitable for any patient whose teeth may be susceptible to cavities. For instance, we may recommend sealants to our adult patients who have teeth with very deep depressions or grooves. Older children and teens can also benefit, as the “cavity-prone” years are considered to be between the ages of 6 and 16.

How long do sealants last?
Sealants can last for several years. During routine checkups, we inspect the condition of your sealants to ensure they are holding up well and properly protecting your teeth. Should the material become cracked or severely damaged, we may recommend replacement. Several factors can influence the durability of your sealants, including your brushing and flossing patterns, diet, and habits such as teeth grinding. The office of Arnold Rifman, DDS, is pleased to discuss sealants and other ways to maintain your family’s dental health.
