What is Perio Protect™?

How do the trays “work”?
Dr. Rifman makes impressions or molds that our dental lab uses to fabricate your custom trays. Since the trays are customized to fit your mouth only, they fit comfortably yet snugly. They are also designed with a patented seal to ensure the medication “stays put” in the periodontal pockets. These spaces can’t be reached with a toothbrush, floss, or other home care products. So, the bacteria-fighting medication treats effectively, deeply, and in a targeted manner.
What medication is used?
The “magic” behind this method is the Perio Gel™. This proprietary gel is formulated with hydrogen peroxide and has undergone extensive research and testing to ensure its safety and effectiveness in treating gum disease. As a natural yet potent antimicrobial, hydrogen peroxide penetrates deeply to break down bacteria, eliminating oral infections and wounds associated with gum disease.
How long should I wear my trays?
Dr. Rifman will prescribe the wear time that is most appropriate for your situation. Generally, trays are worn daily for around 15 minutes. This wear time has been proven to kill bacteria effectively. If you wear the trays for longer than 15 minutes, it won’t hurt or help you – the hydrogen peroxide breaks down into oxygen and water.
How do I apply the gel and care for my trays?
Apply Perio Gel™ as a thin line to the indented or depressed areas of your trays. Then, insert the filled trays into your mouth so that they are fully seated in place and covering all of your teeth. Spit out any excess gel. After wearing your trays for the prescribed time, remove them and brush your teeth to remove any lingering residue from the gel. Brush the trays and also rinse them with cold (never hot) water. Carefully dry your trays with a soft towel. When not in use, store them securely in the storage case provided.
